Transportation in Kunming

Kunming's transport web is built around three tiers: the metro for speed, buses for reach, and taxis/Didi for door-to-door comfort. The metro lines (currently Lines 1, 2, 3, 6) form the backbone, clean, punctual, and cheap enough that a cross-city ride costs less than a bottle of water. Grab a rechargeable Kunming Tong at any station booth. It works on metro and most city buses, sparing you the fumble for coins. Buses fill the gaps where metro hasn't reached yet. But traffic can turn a short hop into a crawl, use them for off-peak exploration, not when you're racing a departure. First-timer trap: the airport metro (Line 6) shuts down earlier than you'd expect. If your flight lands late, skip the touts inside arrivals and head straight to the official taxi rank on the ground floor, insist on the meter. For daytime arrivals, Line 6 is a bargain and drops you near the city center in under 30 minutes. Didi works well here. But have your destination written in Chinese. Drivers rarely speak English.
